Observed Areas Students don't perform well in Waec General Mathematics

Weakness/Remedies
The report stated that apart from not adhering to instructions and accuracies required, candidates' weaknesses were observed in the following areas:
-1)Probability
2)Geometry
3)Sets
4)Algebraic graph -
Majority of the candidates did not understand what was meant by "mutually exclusive events". Candidates exhibited poor knowledge of circle theorems and Geometrical construction. Many candidates could not obtain the elements of the set C = [x: 3 <xes} while others neither used curly brackets { } when listing the elements of a set nor were they able to differentiate between an empty set (0 or {}) or the null set as a subset of a given set ( { 0 }). many candidates were unable to draw the tangent at a given point to determine the gradient of the curve at that point.
(5) Many candidates were unable to put down on paper drawings that would help them in solving questions where they are required.
4.   SUGGESTED REMEDIES
The suggested remedies as stated in the report included:
(1) Candidates should be made to study effectively mathematical concepts and principles and apply them accurately.
(2) Candidates should be encouraged to solve more problems and be exposed to procedures for geometrical construction as well as proofs of geometrical problems.
(3) Teachers should be encouraged to make use of instructional materials during teaching so that some abstract concepts can be made concrete.
(4) Teachers as well as candidates should endeavour to cover all aspects of the syllabus while preparing for the examination.
(5) Candidates should be exposed to past WASSCE questions.

Candidates' Weakness
The Chief Examiner reported that candidates showed significant weakness in the following areas:
Premature approximation
Omission of essential details and units
Inability to write answers to the required degree of accuracy
Inability to apply mathematical principles correctly
Not representing given information in appropriate diagrams
Circle Geometry and its applications
Geometrical construction
Mensuration
Interpretation/solution to  word problems
Reading from graphs
Logical reasoning
SUGGESTED REMEDIES
The following remedies were suggested by the Chief Examiner:
Candidates were encouraged to cover all the topics in the syllabus while preparing for the examination
Teachers as well as candidates were encouraged to put in more effort in studying geometry.
Teachers were encouraged to use instructional materials during lesson so as to re-enforce the learning of mathematical concepts
Candidates were encouraged to adhere to the rubrics of the question especially with regards to the use of calculators and degree of accuracy
Candidates were encouraged to avail themselves of past WASSCE General Mathematics questions.
Teachers were encouraged to participate in the Main coordination meeting
Candidates were encouraged to read through the questions carefully so as to understand its demands before answering them
Teachers were encouraged to emphasize these weak areas during instruction and lead them to appreciate the application of Mathematical concepts in everyday living

2017 UTME NOT YET ON SALE -- JAMB

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board says it has not started the sale of its 2017 admission application documents, warning prospective candidates against falling victims of con-men.

The JAMB’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dr Fabian Benjamin, on Monday said that the board would adequately sensitise the public before the sale begin.

He said, “I want the public to be patient. We are putting finishing touches to the arrangements for a hitch free outing.

“We do not want a repeat of what had been happening before and during registration this year.

“We need to ensure that prospective candidates do the right thing and get their results without problems.

“So we want to appeal to prospective candidates to be patient as we will soon begin sale of the forms.”

He warned the general public and prospective candidates not to fall prey to the activities of fraudsters who might lure them into buying fake documents.

2017 UTME: JAMB, NECO, WAEC, NABTEB harmonise timetable

Ahead of 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has agreed on a harmonised timetable with other examination bodies in the country to have a hitch free examination.
The Board at a brainstorming meeting with National Examination Council, NECO, West African Examination Council, WAEC, and National Business and Technical Examination, NABTEB, held at the national headquarters of the Board in Abuja unanimously agreed to harmonize the examination timetable because of the candidates’ desire for qualitative tertiary education.
The harmonised examination timetable has put to rest problems arising from overlapping of examination dates, which would have disenfranchised a sizeable number of candidates.
At the end of the brainstorming session, the bodies resolved that WAEC would speak to all its authorities that from 2018, between March and April, a window of two weeks be created where all other examinations that have nothing to do with Nigeria will be held so as to allow a window for JAMB to conduct its examination.
The bodies agreed that for the purpose of the 2017 UTME, JAMB will shift its examinations to allow students face WAEC, NECO and NABTEB.
However, a ten-day window for JAMB’S UTME has been created by all examination bodies for JAMB to conduct its examination. In view of this, JAMB will soon announce the commencement of sale of the 2017/2018 admission forms for UTME and Direct Entry, DE.
JAMB emphasises the fact that whoever is presently collecting any money in the name of JAMB form should be reported to the Police or any other security agency as fraudster.
NECO and NABTEB have also adjusted their examination timetables to avoid overlap in subjects that are common to the two examination bodies.
A committee was set up to critically appraise the mandates of WAEC, NECO and NABTEB, the three examination bodies to make sure that each body sticks to their original mandate and with the possibility of working together in a synergy that they lead to collaborative examination for the purpose of students having results at one sitting rather than separate sittings.
The essence of the meeting is to continually find solutions to challenges faced by candidates in the cause of their desire for tertiary education.
Again, the Board is using this opportunity to inform Nigerians that it has not commenced the sales of its application documents. The forms will be out as soon as all critical planning are concluded to ensure a smooth examination in 2017.
